How do I open an account?
Stop at the MLMU office and fill out a service application and pay the appropriate deposit. You will need to bring with you a copy of your driver’s license, or picture ID and social security card.
What kinds of payments do you accept?
We accept checks, credit cards (charge 3% to use), cash, or you can set up direct payments (need an application signed and voided check). The direct payments are pulled from your checking/savings account on the 5th of the month. Checks should be made out to the Mountain Lake Municipal Utilities.
I'm moving - How do I close my account?
Tell the MLMU office the date you are moving, so the meters can be read to finalize your usage and the address you are moving to so you can get your deposit back or your final bill. The meter deposit we are holding will be used to pay your final bill. If your bill is smaller than your deposit you will get a check for the difference, but if your bill is larger than the deposit you will get a bill for the difference.
Who does the MLMU receive power from?
MLMU obtains power directly from its city-owned wind turbine and receives an allocation of hydropower from the Western Area Power Administration. Through the Central Municipal Power Agency/Services (CMPAS – pronounced “compass”), MLMU acquires power purchase agreements from a variety of sources, including nuclear, coal, wind, and the Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO) energy market.
How do I know what rate I am paying?
On your light bill you will see your account number. The first two numbers of the account number is the rate group. (00) Final bill, (01) Industrial, (2) Residential, (3) Commercial and (04) Rural.
How & when are Electric and Water meters read?
The meters are read around the 1st of every month by the Utility employees. If the 1st falls on a weekend or a holiday the meter could get read on the 30th of the month or the 2nd of the month.
If I am gone all month why do still have a bill?
If you use no water, sewer or electric you will be charged the base charges unless you have the MLMU shut everything off. The base charges bring service to your house, these rates pay for operation and maintenance of our system.
What happens if I don't pay my bill by the 5th of the month?
If the utility bill is not paid in full by the 5th of the month a fee of 10% of the current charge is added to the bill. (Looking at the upper right corner of your utility bill there are two amounts, due before the 5th and amount due after the 5th.) If the bill is still not paid by the day before the 15th (that the office is open) a hanger will be hung at your home, (fee is $25.00), if the bill is not paid by noon on the 15th ( if the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday, the next day the office is open) your services will be disconnected, (fee is $25.00), when you pay your bill in full and your service is reconnected you will be charged again (fee is $25.00). Disconnections cost you extra money. Example: your bill is $100.00:
Pay your bill by the 5th – $100.00
Pay your bill by noon on the day before the shut off day – $110.00 (10% late fee)
Pay your bill after noon on the day before the shut off day – $135.00 ( hanger on)
